Glossary HTML

Turning: The physical act of turning into a Vampire, done by biting and having a mutating protein solution injected into the bloodstream. Any Sentient species may turn, but humans and elves are more prone to this.

Embracing: Usually done at the time of Turning. You are accepted into the ranks of Vampires. Newly Turned Nobles' often have special celebrations where they are officially recorded in history books. It’s a big deal in some Vampire societies.

Dhampire: Half Vampire, usually 50 % human and 50% Vampire, with a human mother and Vampire father. This is not a hard and fast rule and there are many Dhampire mixes out there. The character Conure is Dhampire with both human and elven ancestors. It’s been suggested that Dracula (this I’m getting from the original VHD universe) went about trying to create the perfect Vampire that could walk in daylight and had no need for food. They say that is why Dhampires came into being. In the ShadowBlood universe, that is exactly why Dracula created Dhampires. He was trying to create the ‘prefect’ Vampire to suit his universes and set up many breeding programs. He utilized Vampires, humans and to a lesser extent, elves. He was more successful in experimental
ShadowBlood Vampires than in the OTHER universe.

Ancient Ancestor, The: Dracula. God. The creator, or co-creator (depending on the myth) of the ShadowBlood universe. The actual name of Dracula is not used often by Vampire believers. They prefer ‘Ancient Ancestor’ in recognition of Dracula’s contribution to and founding of the Vampiric race.

Otherkin: The technical term for anything that isn’t human or animal. Includes weres, mutants, gargoyles, demons, unicorns, angels, fae, and everything else in-between.

Sanguine: A specialized berry that was brought to the attention of Vampires thousands of years ago. I has many important similarities to blood and is the main source of Vampires’ Vitamin C. Although it is not essential that Vampires have huge reserves of Vc in their bodies (they can manufacture their own to some extent), it is vital in the development of a Vampire embryo. Sanguine, also called ‘Blood Fruit’, was later enhanced to be more blood-like, with a fruitier taste and higher protein levels that suit the Vampire metabolism. It is light and sweet, even to human tastes and is described as candy-like in flavor. Some speculate that the original Sanguine was later genetically mutated with blood proteins to produce the variety known today. Vampires have been able to make wine out of this, which they call Blood Wine. Expectant mothers are encouraged to stick with the juice to prevent making the embryo sick if they drink too much of the wine.

Blood Fruit: See Sanguine.

Blood Pills: Basically synthetic blood in pill form. Just add water and PRESTO!! Instant Vampire Food (
TM). Most Vampires can’t stand the stuff, especially at first. To them, It’s like drinking Kool Aid without adding sugar first, or like eating pelleted corn flakes.

VHD: The short spelling of Vampire Hunter D. Vampire Hunter D is a collection of 11 novels and two anime movies from Japan. The story lines follow a very old, quiet, and extraordinarily gifted Vampire Hunter by the name of D. D is what is called a Dhampire. He is half Human, Half Vampire. In his universe, humans dislike him because he is part Vampire and the Vampires dislike him because he is part human. His dad is supposed to be the all famous Dracula of Stoker’s fame ...at least that’s what I have been led to believe. He travels with a creature that is a symbiote of sorts. Some translations call it a demon, others a parasite, and others, a symbiote. It lives in his left palm and can use the powers of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water to restore D’s health (NL’s Note: “Can I please have a one up mushroom, Mario? Thanx.” sorry ..I know, but the earth -air -fire -water thing reminds me of a video game :-D !!)

OTHER, the: The universe of VHD. Since ShadowBlood is an alternate VHD Universe, I wanted to give credit to the original writers and artists of VHD. OTHER is identical to the original universe, with the exception of Dracula himself :-)

Pure Blooded: A term to describe Vampires who where born Vampires and have always been Vampires. They have no genetic ties to the Otherkins or humans. It’s often used as a holier-than-thou term by nobles to describe themselves and separate themselves from what they consider to be paupers of society.

FFs: Short for Frik Friends, F**k Friends, or F**king Friends. It is Vampire term to describe a partner that has been chosen solely to meet sexual gratification. FFs are not dates, but they can be good friends and many FFs eventually fall in love and marry. Not everyone has one, but they are convenient.

Strigoi: The religious term used for the Vampiric race. Used as a term of respect by Vampire elders and often dismissed as stupid rhetoric by younger generations. Most followers of Dracula embrace this terminology. In the real world, it is the Romanian term for Vampire. It is an offshoot term originating from the Romanian word Strix, which means Witch or Demon.

Sire: 1) Sire is used to describe male Vampires who participate in Dracula’s breeding program. They are the biological fathers of Dhampires and Vampires alike. 2) Sire is the technical term used for both male and female Vampires who have bitten someone and caused them to Turn.

Brood Mare: A semi derogatory term used for those woman who have been serviced by Dracula and bear his Vampiric experiments. Dracula is thought to have mated with millions of these woman over several worlds.

Order Of Dracula: Also known as the OOD. A human cult based on another universe’s ideas of Vampires. It originated in on an alternate Earth who’s Vampires were very different from what is known in ShadowBlood. Vampires there existed like the Sanguine and Psi Vampires (re: energy feeders) of our world. Take the people who think they are vampires in this world and pop them into ShadowBlood where Vampires are **REAL** in the **mythological** sense. Untold numbers of This cult turned to ShadowBlood Vampires for help. They wanted to practice their faith in peace yet be accepted as normal members of society. Many cult members begged to be ShadowBlood Vampires. Requests were granted and strict Turning requirements were required before someone was Embraced. Over time, OOD members have created their own colonies. They keep to themselves and see ShadowBlood Vampires as both friends and saviors. Some ShadowBlood Vampires have eagerly joined their OOD companions in order to ease the ‘non vampire’ vampires into their new home. ShadowBlood Vampires were surprised at how open the OOD followers were. Numerous ShadowBlood Vampires have adopted the OOD faith and use their own creator, Dracula, as their own, personal God.

Cold Forging: A specialized power given to early Vampire smiths to help them create magickal swords so powerful and rare that the only one to have reputedly MADE one was Dracula himself! Cold Forging is very rare among Vampires, but their skills can be seen everywhere. Everyone has heard of at least one manufacturer of Cold Forged objects, though most of these are supposedly decorative rings and amulets that lovers grant each other at time of marriage or parting. D was given one by his good friend a long time ago. He has long suspected a sword Dracula’s friend made millennia ago has since been put in the possession of Conure, his best friend!!

Sun Bait: Slang for creatures that can walk in the day without suffering. It’s a term usually used to describe humans, elves, some demons and all angels.

Thirst, the: The term used to describe the Vampire’s need for blood.

Prey Instinct / Prey Drive: The Vampire’s natural urge to hunt and feed from living beings. It can be repressed to some extent by obeying the Thirst.

Over Heating: This happens to Dhampires when they get too much exposure to the sun. It’s like the worst kind of heat exhaustion one can get, but for those carrying Vampire blood. One has to watch how long they stay in the sun and for how long. Most have to carry some carving or digging device in case of an emergency, much like a human needs to carry a first aid kit.

Morpheus, The: Morpheus is a title granted to a select few who are willing to enter the dreams of vampires and their followers in attempts to gain truth or wisdom in spiritual matters. The Morpheus are also asked to test future initiates of other faiths, much as a Spirit Guide helps a Shaman through a Spirit Quest. Every 2000 years a new trainee is selected. There are often hundreds of Morpheus’ at one time.

Bearers of this name often work hand in hand with Followers of Dracula. They are free to harass the dreams of potential Vampires and ‘children’ of the Vampire peoples. Young, old, babes, aliens, atheists, devout Strigoi, it’s all the same to the Morpheus. They are free to go where they please and do as they want. They are always granted special powers by Dracula, such as the ability to create physical constructs of the creatures dreamers create. The Morpheus maintain their title and specialized abilities until their dying breath, or until the Ancient Ancestor deems them usable in another lifetime. In which case, they are stripped of their life as it were a cloak, and they attain serventhood in the ranks of Dracula’s spiritual host. Many Morpheus’ do not attain this cloak, although it remains as an eagerly anticipated goal to work towards. The Only Morpheus’ who lived to see this next stage of servant hood were The original Morpheus, Catacomb, and her servant in arms, Whip Rylee.

After Realm, The: Heaven. The Afterlife. Summer land. The thereafter. The place Vampires go to finish their recreations in other worlds and come to permanently rest after their reincarnation(s) are done. Dracula is said to rule this world in his true form.

Daemon Spawn: The unfortunate victims of a Daemon attack. Those who are unfortunate enough to get caught are warped beyond recognition into hideous beasts only found in the depths of hell. Those who are caught are warped, often suffocating under their own flesh but given enough air that they continue living. The kindest thing to do to these creatures is to kill them. Holy Water appears to release their souls and break them from their mortal curse, but their body is no longer usable, if anything remains at all. Most Spawn are outrageously gory. Others slowly have their minds eaten away by spirits living in their flesh. How the victim remains tortured depends on the Daemon attacking and some can be very sadistic indeed.

Dream Walkers: One of the many nick names for the Morpheus.

Dream Seekers: Yet ANOTHER name for the Morpheus. This term is used as a name of Honor.

Daemons: Truly evil beasts that would give Satan a run for his money. These creatures have no known origin and are increasing in power. It’s said that they have caught scent of the Vampire Messiah and are closing in on the people that have vowed to protect her.

Messiah, The: The one who will lead the peoples of ShadowBlood to unity and will eventually defeat the Daemons with their help. No-one knows exactly who this messiah is. Some say it is a child related to Dracula. Others say it is someone who D will train. Closer to the Truth is the speculation that D will be either the father or foster father of this Vampire Messiah.

What the Morpheus know about the Vampire Myth is that the Messiah will be a female Dhampire. She will eventually lead an army against the Daemon stronghold, but before that can happen, ShadowBlood will fall into chaos.
