Turning HTML

The following, I’ve been told, is unique to my universe.

Vampires can control who they Turn by biting. We’re not talking run of the mill ‘I vant to suck yer blood!’ biting. In order to prevent every victim they bite from Turning, they have the ability to consciously inject their victims with a solution that is forced into the blood at time of biting. It’s much like a snake bite, but a Vampire, or Dhampire that inherited the ability, can control when and where they can inject the concoction. They do not have to feed in order to have this done, but is often a convenient time :-). Once a Vampire, you cannot be Turned again. If You have less than approximately 20% Vampire in you and you’re mostly human (and in some cases, elven), you can Turn. Any more than 35% Vampire and the bite is ineffective. Between these extremes, and you’re bitten, the bite simply enhances the abilities you already have but you do not Turn.

The Turning concoction itself is painless. It has a neurological numbing effect and contains a protein that mutates the victim’s genes to become (what else!) a Vampire.

Turning is a pleasant experience. Some have quoted it as being almost orgasm-like. It often takes minutes to change and when it finally comes, the changee feels an overwhelming sense of excitement and ecstasy. Most people don’t take to this change very dramatically, but there have been a few cases where the changee has broken out into full fledged orgasm in front of others. Very embarrassing indeed!

Biting is painful at first. Experienced Vampires can do it as painlessly as possible, but it takes practice and a partner, which isn’t always available. The initial bite is sharp and firm, but not super uncomfortable in the hands -and mouth- of an expert. It is painful as the teeth puncture skin and are driven into the vein. However, Vampires have developed a natural mechanism that prevents struggling in the victim. As a Vampire feeds, they immediately produce a pheromone that subdues their prey, making them relaxed, limp and almost unresponsive. It makes feeding pleasurable and almost wanted. The saliva itself contains an anesthetic that numbs the initial pain of biting. It kicks in after a few seconds. After feeding, if the wound is not licked closed right away, the wound remains numb for up to half an hour. There have been no known negative reactions to the pheromone or anesthetic, though after feeding, the victim’s initial fear over rides the Vampire’s natural mechanisms. Some Vampires are lucky enough to have what is called a ‘donor’ or a set of ‘donors’. These are people that are willing to be ‘meals with heels’ for a Vampire friend or Governor. Some Nobles have the money to pay people to be donors.

Embracing is a strictly controlled aspect in some Vampire societies. Most places, usually in rural areas, are pretty lax about who gets to become a Vampire. However, in heavily desolated areas of society, where population control is a must (such as a megapolis), Embracing is a heavily guarded secret and only given to those who have proven themselves to be ‘worthy’ of the honor. In these areas, it’s felt that too many people being embraced would unnecessarily (Cough ...pardon the pun) drain food reserves. **cough**

Vampire teeth have a unique structure to them. They are shaped much like a wolf’s, but they are hollow on the inside and extra strong so that when they bite their victims, they won’t break their teeth. They have 2 layers to their canines. The first layer, the larger and tougher layer, is dense but is mobile and is pressed upwards into their gums at feeding. The harder they bite, the deeper the inner layer is driven into the flesh. This exposes the thinner, yellowed and MUCH sharper inner layer. This inner layer is protected by the first layer, as the inner layer is much more fragile, but it is the ideal tool for a creature as unique as the Vampire. If a Vampire is unfortunate enough to lose one of their teeth in battle, or, Dracula forbid, as they feed, they can regrow it. This can take days, however, and it can be quite itchy. They can also get awfully hungry if there’s no Sanguine around.
